Roofing in Hochatown, OK
Hochatown is in McCurtain County, in the pine and hardwood woods of southeast Oklahoma, near Broken Bow Lake and Beavers Bend. Most of the roofs here belong to vacation cabins and rental houses set back in the trees. A cabin often has a steep main roof, a lower porch roof, and a deck the limbs lean over. Some are lived in all year. Many are booked for the weekend and sit quiet in between. A roof that is watched every rain and a roof that waits for the next guest do not get the same care.
Spring storms bring hail and hard wind through this corner of Oklahoma. One squall can bruise the slope that faces the weather and leave the shaded side looking almost untouched. Summers stay hot and humid, and shade keeps the north side of a cabin damp, so needles, leaves, and moss pack into valleys and behind chimneys. Winter ice can load a limb until it drops on a ridge. A cabin under a full canopy and a cabin in a clearing by the water do not wear out the same way. After a storm, check the deck, the flashing where the porch meets the main roof, and the boots around the vents.
For cabins and houses in Hochatown we install new roofs, tear-offs, overlays, and metal roofs. Metal is a fair option in these woods because it sheds needles and handles a steep porch roof better than a worn asphalt valley. It is not the automatic answer. If the deck is sound and there is only one layer of shingles, an overlay can still be the right spend, and we will say so. If the cabin already carries two layers, or a valley has gone soft in the shade, we tear the old roof off and replace bad wood as we find it. Where a porch or a dormer meets the main roof, the flashing has to be done on purpose.
